DA MONDAY LUNCH" BREAK...........LOU DONALDSON " POT BELLY "

LOU DONALDSON

ANOTHER ONE OF THEM SAMPLE'S THAT ITS " ROLLING " NATURE HAS MADE IT A CHOICE FOR MANY OF THE EARLY 90'S BRIGHTEST STREET HIP HOP HEADZ.

THE HORNS HAVE BEEN LIFTED MANY TIMES AND USED AS COMPLETE STABS........WHICH IS THE STRANGE THING ABOUT THIS ONE.....MANY OF THE BIG SAMPLES WITHIN HIP HOP NATURALLY HAVE SPACE WITHIN FOR CHOPPING INTO SINGLE HIT'S OR CHOPS BUT " POT BELLY " IS A FULL SOUNDING SEQUENCE THAT NOT MANY HAVE MANGED TO SPLICE AND RA-ARRANGE.

AS YOU HEAR WITH THE EXAMPLES BELOW IT HAS BEEN LOOPED UP AND USED PRETTY STRAIGHT OR E.Q-ED BY MANY A PRODUCER SO IT BECOME'S THE MAIN HI HAT PATTERN OR HAD THE BRIGHTNESS TURNED DOWN TO BE THE MAIN BASSLINE.

AS WITH MOST THESE THINGS ONE COULD WAFFLE FOR DAYZ........ THE SIMPLE ANSWER IS THIS IS ONE F_CKING FUNKY SAMPLE.

POT BELLY.........

Lou Donaldson

Saxophonist Lou Donaldson unofficially became the flag bearer for the soul jazz, funk movement with his 1970 "hit": Everything I Do Goin To Be Funky(From Now On). This popular tune did not even make this compilation as Donaldson has much funkier stuff in his repertoire. With Melvin Sparks and Lonnie Smith backing him up on the CD’s tracks, it isn’t hard to see the direction that Donaldson was taking his music in. Similar to Lee Morgan, Donaldson was playing music long before the popularity of funk-jazz had reached its zenith. During the early and mid 1960s, when the funk had yet to arrive, Donaldson was experimenting with the Boogaloo sounds with traditional jazz lineups. Just like all of Blue Breakbeat musicians, Lou Donaldson influence reached the Hip-Hop of the 1990s. The 1970 instrumental, Pot Belly, was reused by the Tribe Called Quest for their tune " If The Papes Come". DJ Smash speaks of Lou Donaldson in the CD’s liner notes: "Every revolution needs ammunition, and if funk be your arsenal, Lou made sure there will never be a shortage…..Long after the intellectual crowd goes home, Lou Donaldson will always be in the house, in the groove, in the pocket and forever in the mix".

DA MONDAY "LUNCH" BREAK...........MELVIN BLISS ( BERNARD PURDIE ON STICK'S ) " SYNTHETIC SUBSTITUTION "

SO " FUNKY DRUMMER " , " ROCKET IN THE POCKET " , " GET OUT OF MY LIFE WOMAN " , " APACHE " , " IT'S MY THING " LITERALLY BREAKS THAT ARE ON A FIRST NAME BASIS WITH FAN'S OF SAMPLING , HIP HOP AND BEYOND

THIS PURDIE DRUMMED BREAK DOESN'T TEND TO BE NAME DROPPED OR HAVE THE LEGACY OF THE ABOVE YET IT MUST BE ONE OF THE MOST SAMPLED TRACKS OF ALL TIME.

ANOTHER CURIOUS THING IS THAT IT SUITED BOTH COASTS..........IT'S BEEN LOOPED , CHOPPED , SPEEDED UP AND DOWN.......PARTY TRACKED...GANGSTA BOPPED.

FIRST 16 BARS ( PIANO SECTION ) HAVE APPEARED ON COUNTLESS RECORDS FROM GANGSTA , TO HORROR-CORE TO ALL OUT PARTY TRACKS SO THE MOOD OF THE RECORDING HASN'T STREAMLINED IT CHOICE AMONGST PRODUCERS.

IS IT THE OPEN - CLOSED HI-HATS DRAGGING AT THE END OF THE SNARE ?

IT DOESN'T MATTER , IT IS JUST A PLAIN OLD FUNKY AZZ TRACK RUMORED TO BE CUT AS A FILLER FOR A B-SIDE.

I WONDER WHAT DJ DROPPED DOUBLE COPIES OF THIS FIRST ......WHAT WAS THE AUDIENCE'S REACTION ?......PURE FIYA IN MY IMAGINATION.

TO BE HONEST I COULD LISTEN TO THIS BREAK LOOOPED FOR A GOOD 37 HOURS AND NOT BE BORED.

LADIES AND GENTLEMEN , BOY & GIRL HERE IS

MELVIN BLISS ( BERNARD PURDIE ON THE STICKS ) " SYNTHETIC SUBSTITUTION "

AS WITH A LOT OF SAMPLING HISTORY THE CREATORS HAVE VERY LITTLE TO SHOW FOR THEIR WORK ( READ "BROKE AS A MUTHAF_CKER" ) , IT APPEARS IN THE WAVE OF THE " BEAT DIGGERS " HEYDAY OF THE EARLY 90'S TIL 2005 ( FOR ME THE WATERSHED IN " DA INDUSTRY " ) THAT THESE CAT'S DIDN'T GET BOOKED FOR RETRO SHOWS , HALF HOUR DOC'S ON THE FOUNDATIONS OF HIP HOP OR " SHOWCASE " DOUBLE BILL'S OF DJ'S AND FOREFATHERS.

LIFE GOES ON AND MORE AND MORE OF THESE PIVITOL PLAYERS ( NOT THAT THEY WOULD HAVE BEEN AWARE OF THE INFLUENCE THEY WOULD HAVE ON MODERN MUSIC ) ARE PASSING ON.

STRANGE DAYZ OF FREE MUSIC AND KNOWLEDGE WE LIVE IN AND YET FOR ALL OF IT NOT MUCH FANFARE THIS JULY WHEN BLISS ( RUMORED TO BE 75....I LOVE THAT NO ONE WAS SURE HOW OLD HE WAS ) PASSED WAY.

HERE IS A TRAILER FOR A DOCUMENTARY ON WHAT IS BASICALLY 6-8 SECOUNDS OF MUSIC.

DJ JS-1 " SOUND WAVES - COLD CUTZ REMIXES PART II )

www.goldy.vwat.net

THE BLURB.............( DON'T BOTHER READING....JS-1 IS DA SHEEEEETTTTTT AND U GETTING IT LEGEIT FREE LIKE.............C'MON KIDD )

In the mid 90's myself and Dj Spinbad did the "Cold Cutz Remixes (If I Ruled The Radio)" mixtape. We made that mixtape on broken 4-track-cassette recorders. We remixed tons of acapellas, and every song on the mixtape was an exclusive blend we did using turntables only. We re-scratched the song hooks, added sound fx, did some scratch interludes and really set the bar high for mixtape production. To date, that mixtape has reached tens of thousands of people and is considered one of the best mixtapes of all-time. This new mix was not supposed to be the specific part 2 to that mix, but it's done in a similar way and it is the "unofficial" part 2. There is ONLY acapella remixes on this new mix as well. I tried to use acapellas that we didn't use on the first one and also tried to squeeze in some rare ones too. There are some really great acapellas on here like The Symphony (Masta Ace verse), Peter Piper by Run Dmc, Full Clip by Gangstarr, Set It Off by Big Daddy Kane, Eric B is President by Eric B & Rakim, Mama Said Knock You Out by LL Cool J, The Bitch in Yoo by Common, n more... A mix like this is completely opposite of many lazy djays' mixes that let songs play all the way and then talk or play sound fx in between every track. This involves soo much more, and is soo much more fun to make. I used hundreds of different beats and acapellas.

Today most music has become free online and the mixtape game is not what it once was. It's easy to find thousands of mixtapes for free download, i know i posted all of mine for free download at: (www.DJJS1.BLOGSPOT.com)
Sooo, with everything being free, in order to make it worthwhile for someone to possibly purchase a CD, I have continued to make mixes that i noticeable put lots of work into. All i really ask is that people spread the word and get these mixes out there. Please re-post this, email it to your friends, re-tweet this, etc... (There is the buttons to re-post on facebook and twiiter below this post) Lets keep the pressure on all those horrible djays out there and try to keep some respect, honor, dignity and skills to the mixtape legacy.

Special Thanks to my friends and co-djays who gave me a few treats for this mix cd.... Dj Premier, JBX & Big City Records, Dj Eclipse & Fatbeats, Dj Riz,
Mix Greens, Dj Young C, and Dj Ody Roc... they all contributed acapellas to this mix....

Kanye West - So Appalled feat. RZA, Jay-Z, Pusha T, Swizz Beatz & Cyhi The Prynce

Another release from Kanye's GOOD Music label, this time round he enlists Jigga man, Rza, Pusha T, Swizz Beatz and Chyni The Prince. Check it out here

Nottz - Blast That feat. Black Milk

Originally scheduled for an October 12th release, Nottz and his label Raw Koncept Media Group have announced a new release date for the album, October 26th. While his fans eagerly await You Need This Music, the Grammy winning producer/rapper is releasing a new single to appease fans' appetite over the extended wait. For the latest single, "Blast That," Nottz enlists the help of fellow acclaimed producer/rapper Black Milk, whose own project Album Of The Year is garnering a swell of buzz itself.

"Turn up this real hip-hop and turn that wackness down," says Nottz on the message behind his latest single, a track with Brash guitar licks laced over top the beat's heavy, trunk rattling drums. Collaborating with the aforementioned Black Milk proved to be a wise choice, as the track's staccato feel matches perfectly with Black's unique flow, while showcasing both as artists just as dangerous behind the mic as behind the boards. "I felt like Black Milk was the right person for the job for a real 'bring the boom bap back' type record. Something for the new generation to hear," remarks Nottz. Given the chemistry between the two – it took Black Milk only a day to write and record his verse for the song – it sounds like the two may be onto something.

Check out the latest single from Nottz 'Blast That" Featuring Black Milk
"Blast That"

Nottz' You Need This Music will be available October 26, 2010 via Raw Koncept Media Group.

Edit Of The Week (No.5)

William de vaughn - be thankful for what you got (1980 disco version - tony johns edit)

This week`s edit is by Londons Tony John who in his own words is a a true believer in music and all its healing powers, Tony has been busy putting his touch to some great music over the past few months working on tracks by artist`s like Gary Numan, Babe Ruth & Fela Kuti to name a few, but his latest edit has really got me, to be honest he hasnt really done much but extended the intro of the already beefed up 1980 disco version but then again sometimes less is more, this is a timeless track with a wonderful message and to me the whole thing with edits is its all about picking them classic and wonderful pieces of music that maybe people have sometimes forgotten about and giving them that little touch to bring back around again and back to life, there have been many cover versions, remixes and edit of this William De Vaughn classic over the years but this disco version to me is the stand out and i feel if its played to me in 10 years time it will still sound just as good, so thats enough of me bigging up the track and time to check it out yourself the download link has reached its 100 limit but Tony has giving me the go ahead to share this fresh Wav file link which you can find below, enjoy :)
